Bred in ages past to be weapons in the war for Middle-earth, the Great Worms were huge, serpentine creatures, wrapped in scaly hides and possessed of wicked intelligence. Inside combined the cunning of thinking beings and the savagery of wild beasts.

Long horns, bladed claws and wicked maws of countless teeth they had. The sharp, slitted eyes of the Dragons were ever-watchful, their sense of smell keen, and their long bodies grew to a size unrivalled by any other creatures to walk upon the earth. Some were winged, able to take to the skies and travel vast distances like the wind. Others burned with fiery wrath inside, spewing conflagration and death from their outstretched jaws at will. And in some such abilities were paired to terrifying effect...

By the later years of the Third Age only a few remained, mostly sequestered in the scorched lands of the Withered Heath, far to the north and pinned between the spurred arms of the Grey Mountains. Great was their hunger and a lust for violence burned ever in their bellies. When rumour of the wealth of Erebor reached their ears, the greatest of the Fire Drakes yet living in Middle-earth took to wing and rushed south. Smaug was his name; a vast gold and red monster whose viciousness was matched only by his pride.

His coming was like a hurricane of fire; the cities of Dale and Erebor swiftly falling before his irresistible advance; countless Dwarves and Men consumed in his flames, or shredded by tooth and claw. Barely had the inhabitants realised what calamity was befalling them when they were dead or displaced. Then the Great Dragon, who called himself Magnificent, seized the riches of the Lonely Mountain and took up residence to lie coiled upon his hoard. Henceforth Erebor became a place of dread, and all about the lands became barren, parched and despoiled; the Desolation of Smaug.

Digitally sculpted in exquisite detail by long-time Wētā Workshop sculptor Daniel Cockersell, Smaug the Magnificent will make a stunning addition to your collection of Wētā Workshop miniature statues.

Our authentic prop replicas and collectibles are designed by the very same artists who have worked on the three films, so effectively they come straight from Middle-earth.

Please note: images are of a pre-production prototype. Each sculpture is hand painted and minor variations will occur.

A NOTE ON OPEN EDITION COLLECTIBLES

Smaug the Magnificent is an Open Edition piece, meaning it is not restricted to a specific number of reproductions. However, this does not guarantee Wētā Workshop will continue to produce the statue in the future. We recommend purchasing your Open Edition statue early, to avoid disappointment. Should you miss out, please contact us to be placed on the waiting list at support@wetanz.co.nz. Demand will determine if this collectible is reproduced.

It takes hundreds of hours to design, sculpt, model make, mold, and paint the prototype for each new Middle-earth piece. Whether it be a prop replica, beautiful environment or iconic character, we treat our collectibles with the same level of care and attention to detail that we bring to our film work.

  1. Unique

I collect a lot of statues and I figured it was time to add a Weta dragon to my collection. He is definitely unique among my collection and looks pretty awesome in terms of the body. The wings are very delicate and I feel that whoever painted his face did a rush job as it was not as detailed as I expected but all in all, on sale, definitely worth it.

  3. Smaug the Adorable
My Smaug miniature arrived today and he\'s just precious! For something that has been so scaled down, the level of detail is amazing, great paintwork as well! Do handle with care, the wings seem delicate, but an amazing addition to the miniature collection.

  4. A Treasure Fit For Erebor
This is my first purchase from the Weta Store & I could not be happier. The sculpt and paint job are beautiful and the piece is excellent value for money. There are some minor mold lines between the wings and body on close inspection but these details are unnoticeable from afar. A must have for any Hobbit/LOTR collector!

  5. Lifelike Wyrm
Looks like it could be alive. Tiniest yellow eyes with black pupils staring at you with malice. Must handle with care, not many places to carefully touch it. Paint job is outstanding. Must\'ve painted the body first and then attached it to the rock. The dragon\'s wings and tail are slightly bendable with a slight rubber feel to it. Good thing because it would\'ve broken when I first handled it. Everybody who sees it says great work , well done! It\'s only a letter opener high and not too wide, so it displays well anywhere. Extremely happy with this purchase!

  6. Awesome piece!
I love this new miniature! The detail is amazing, as always, and it is a nice addition to my growing collection of figures from Middle Earth.
I\'d advise caution when handling it around the wings/tail as there are spikes that feel like they could accidentally break if mishandled.
