The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Chronicles, Cloaks and Daggers peers through the silver screen to examine the incredible efforts undertaken to create thousands of costumes, armour, weapons, props and set dressing elements for Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson's adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit.

Covering both The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, this lavish volume bulges with behind-the-scenes images, sumptuous photography and film stills.

The films' stars and the creative geniuses behind countless beautiful objets d'art share their insights and stories, revealing how it felt to craft, wield and wear these precious pieces of Middle-earth.

Researched and compiled by Weta Workshop senior concept designer Daniel Falconer, with a foreword by Evangeline Lilly, playing Tauriel the Woodland Elf, and an introduction by costume designer Ann Maskrey, this is the definitive guide to the artefacts and sumptuous fabrics of The Hobbit film adaptations.

The Hobbit Chronicles show the incredible attention to detail that goes into everything that is being produced for these films and are a wonderful opportunity to showcase the designs and artistry of so many people within their respective departments.

  8. Stunning
This book is just beautiful. It's incredibly detailed and focuses mainly more on the props in An Unexpected Journey and the Desolation of Smaug. I was lucky enough to have mine signed by Richard Taylor and Tania Rodger, as well as Jed Brophy. (Nori!) I would definitely recommend this book to all Weta fans!

  10. An invaluable, behind the scenes, look at the movie's creation.
Cloaks & Daggers begins with Hobbitton and Bilbo’s home and visits Laketown, Dale and many other locales featured in the movie; while also diving deeper into the characters themselves. Their weapons and accessories, clothing and habits are all explored in depth, from concept to finalization. It gives us a much richer experience when watching these movies again and again. We are no longer observing a work of fiction come to life but a living, breathing world that could exist.

Looking at the photographs and reading the viewpoints of the set dressers and designers made everything feel like a real home or a real place. Many of the set pieces I could absolutely see in my own home. When you are watching the movie you really don’t have time to focus on all the background props, but when studying a photograph you can see all the little details and touches the artists put into each piece or the entire scene. The next time I see this movie I will try to notice these exact props in the film and be like, “there it is and now I know how it got there.”

For any fan of the Hobbit, this book is an invaluable, behind the scenes, look at its creation.

  18. Love is in the detail
This book is amazing and worth every dollar! The detail in the work as part of the book and what the people do to create the sets and costumes is stunning. Written descriptions accompany the photography that fully complements the hard work and the perfection each individual puts into their work. If you want to get something that shows you a bit of everything including weapon and costume design and detail this is the thing to buy!

  19. AWESOME
This is a incredibly detailed book, that is very thick and worth the money value. The only bad thing about the book, is the fact that they do not put in any pictures of the actors using the props.

  20. Awesome addition to me collection
The fourth book in this collection is a superb addon to it for me. I just received it today after waiting patiently for what seemed like an eternity.

To go one step further, I think this edition is even better layed out in presentation than the first three.
