Captain of the King’s guards, Tauriel was a Silvan Elf of the Woodland Realm. Though considered young among her kind, with but a few centuries of experience, Tauriel was spirited and bright. Her prowess as a warrior saw her lead hunting parties into the glowering dark of Mirkwood to burn out infestations of spiders and other foul things that now haunted the once fair forest.

Tauriel’s perception of character was as sharp as her eyes, and when she and her hunters apprehended the Company of Thorin straying in the blackened woods, she was quick to see in young Dwarf Kili a kindred soul that transcended the enmity of their races. Despite the hostility with which her king treated the Dwarf captives, Tauriel looked favourably upon Kili, eventually defying orders to follow her own heart and track him when the Dwarves escaped Thranduil’s dungeons.

CREATING TAURIEL OF THE WOODLAND REALM

As a character who was specifically created for The Hobbit motion picture trilogy, Tauriel presented a unique challenge to Weta Workshop’s Design Studio. Designers sought to strike a balance between fierce huntress and feminine Elf through weapons and costume. Weta Workshop designer Paul Tobin matched Tauriel’s fighting strength to that of Legolas with a signature set of daggers.

For wardrobe, costume designer Lesley Burkes Harding created a sense of continuity with Arwen’s riding outfit in The Lord of the Rings. Rather than Elven silks beneath the travelling cloak, Tauriel wore a deerskin jacket and leather cuirass befitting the Captain of Thranduil’s Guard. The leather armour was constructed by Weta Workshop’s Cathy ‘Tree’ Harris, with leaf detailing by Kelly Marie and Daniel Falconer.

Capturing all this fine detail, from dual daggers to decorated armour, was sculptor Gary Hunt – no stranger to Middle-earth, having worked on both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. Using the original screen-used daggers and costume as reference, Gary worked digitally in Zbrush to bring Tauriel to life.

FEATURES OF TAURIEL OF THE WOODLAND REALM

  • Crafted from high-quality polystone;
  • 1:6 scale;
  • Limited Edition of 800;
  • Sculpted by Gary Hunt.

Tauriel’s daggers have a thorn-like shape and could be used with a reverse grip, which I thought might suggest an interesting fighting style that would differ from and complement Legolas’s dual dagger.

Please note: images are of a pre-production prototype. Each statue is painted by hand and slight variations will occur.

It takes 400-500 hours to design, sculpt, model make, mold, and paint the prototype for each new Middle-earth piece. Whether it be a prop replica, beautiful environment or iconic character, we treat our collectibles with the same level of care and attention to detail that we bring to our film work.

  3. Great sculpt, but what\'s the face moulded from?
    This is a good figure, great sculpt, and great detail everywhere except the face. I\'m not disappointed with the likeness like some buyers have been, but what\'s it moulded from? It has none of the texture of the prototype. It\'s completely smooth and has a slightly translucent quality to whatever the material is. It\'s the kind of face I\'d expect on a plastic figure, not a polystone statue.

  4. Great Sculp! Worthless face...
    The scuplture looks amazing, it has everthing. The paint job is amazing, the smallest details on het clothing are beautifully painted. And the Hair is Perfect! But the face looks like a happy meal toy. It doesn\'t look anything like Tauriel. Really dissapointed by that. Overall its an okay statue from a distance.

  5. Beautiful figurine, but arrived broken :(
    I was looking forward to the day this figurine arrives as a gift from my husband! When she did, she was beautifully sculpted and painted.
    Upon lifting it out of the box, I heard a rattle, which is almost never a good thing. It was Tauriel\'s back-stepping broken off leg that was making the noise </3 One of her daggers was broken as well. The packaging was unfortunately inadequate for the long journey it had to withstand (all the way to Canada).
    We did request a replacement, hopefully it arrives undamaged the second time around.
    My rating is based on the delivery experience, not the figurine itself.

  6. Tauriel of the woodland realm
    I have been waiting for this piece and can honestly say it’s been worth the wait. The sculpt is fantastic and the attention to detail is superb, Tauriel’s hair is incredible to think this has been sent as a one piece sculpt is astounding. Tauriel looks ethereal and serene, Her ears are also a thing to behold so fine is the attention to detail. She will look fantastic alongside my Legolas
    Top marks Weta!

  7. Awful Face
    The overall sculpt and pose is gorgeous. Her body, clothing, and hair are perfection, however the face is a HUGE letdown. It looks nothing like the prototype, or Evangeline Lily/Tauriel in general. I am so disappointed in this statue, out of all the statues I own, this one is probably the worst in terms of face paint and likeness to the actor. Whoever signed off on this statue clearly had no idea who it was supposed to look like. It actually looks like actress Patricia Velasquez with red hair. If I could add a picture of the statue I received I would.

    This statue was expensive, and for it to look so off character is terrible. This purchase will certainly determine if I pre-order again in the future. I will wait next time to see what others get before placing an order myself. Shame on the painter and sculpture!

  8. An unexpected surprise!
    It is always a pleasant surprise when you receive word that a shipment is on an unexpected journey your way. In the box I uncovered a beautifully sculpted Tauriel, sporting great detail, pose and base paint. I find it surprising however that it seems that high production value pieces such as this sometimes gets a slightly rushed trip through paint quality control. Because upon a more thorough inspection, which I think both the product and review should have, I find a few imperfections that I feel does not represent what I might have expected. Both knuckles and face are not 100 percent, though I think the base skin color is spot on (great complement!), there is no color in her cheeks and the mascara is slightly dripping. Has she been crying? :) Also I\'m surprised an elf of her stature is slightly cross eyed. But at least that is consistent with the proto type photos. :P

    For this reason I rate it at a good four stars, and would absolutely recommend the piece. But would at the same time urge Weta to go those extra few steps it takes to bring the production value of the paint job at the same level as the rest of the sculpt(s). Thanks!

    Now to find a spot for her next to the rest of the cast...

  9. Nice!
    Excited to see another Tauriel piece. Bought the original ‘bow’ style Tauriel piece a few years back and this one looks equally exceptional. I’m in! Will update review when recieved. Thank you WETA!

  10. Face
    The face doesn\'t look like tauriel sadly. The previous one on the tree was way better

  11. Extreme lack of similarity
    This is sadly one of the worst looking statues in terms of likeness. There are no facial features which even reminds me of Evangeline Lilly. The eyes are way off, as well as the mouth. However, the pose is brilliant, but they seriously need a quality control for their statues, because this is overall bad. The face sculpt is nowhere near Evangeline lilly in terms of likeness.

  12. Brilliant!
    I am more a Lord of the Rings fan, but this statue catched my eye. The pose is brilliant, and also the sculpt. I will be looking forward to get this one.

  13. How very sad! Weta sucumbs to the power of \"The Ring\"
    This is quite a nice figure but unfortunately a terrible decision... I find it hard to fathom why Weta should go ahead and produce another Tauriel when this character has only recently released in a solo pose, but I\'d guess it\'s mainly about the dollar. All you succeed in doing here is devaluing the rather superb earlier version. There\'s many a true fan waiting for other important figures that are well overdue for re release? How about a sensible release like Aragorn or Arwen \"on foot\" hence making them much more affordable for your LOYAL and FAITHFUL collectors! (not everyone is loaded to the hilt with dwarven gold and able to afford the massive figures on mounts you seem to love churning out). I feel you are losing the plot a little here in relation to your fanbase of serious (but not so wealthy) collectors. I used to consider these figures an investment but I\'m starting to have serious doubts no thanks to decisions like this. Some balance and sanity please!
