Come face to face with Smaug the Magnificent, the most realistic, breathtaking and destructive dragon ever to appear on screen, in this gallery of exclusive images that tell the story of how he was created.

Smaug is possibly the most memorable character in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit: a huge, malevolent, fire-breathing, talking dragon! But while he makes quite an impact in the book, in Peter Jackson's film adaptation he is definitely the most spectacular creature ever to appear on screen.

So how did the filmmakers manage to take the dragon that has lived in millions of readers' imaginations and turn him into a totally unique and unforgettable living, breathing character?

The answer can be found in Smaug: Unleashing the Dragon. Packed with stunning, exclusive new images, it reveals how he grew out of thousands of detailed and fantastical concept designs into the beast that is unleashed in awesome digital glory.

As extensive and impressive as Smaug himself.

  1. Smaug the mighty
Awesome book dedicated to the best dragon in cinematic history!
Very cool to see the entire creative process of making Smaug come to life on the big screen!

  2. He is fire, he is death.
I was so thrilled that there'd be a book just about Smaug - and it delivered. To see what the artists came up with during the process of finding a right design... wow. And HOW they did it in the end... very special to get such a look behind the scenes.

  3. He's PERFECT! <3
Great quality, love his features, kinda wish his wings could bend more, and the fact his tail doesn't allow bending is kind of a bummer, but he's more or less perfect!

To all the complaints that he's 'too small' or 'smaller' then expected, you guys clearly don't know how to measure. It advertised as 22 inch wing span, that's exactly what it is. From there you should gather just how big his body is based on the photo. Don't know why people were 'shocked' at its size. >_< Just silly in my opinion.

This is a great toy! I love it!!!

  4. Doubles both as a movie memorabilia and a standalone dragon art book
Being a fan of the Hobbit movies and also a fan of fantasy art, especially relating to those taken from the movies that inspired their creation, I knew that this series was going to be a must in my collection. Smaug Unleashing the Dragon is the fourth book in the Hobbit Chronicles series which showcase the art, concept, and steps to get to what ultimately we end up seeing in the movies; while also including the artists input on how they created, what can only be described as, true and magnificent art. Benedict Cumberbatch, the voice of Smaug, has also voiced his ideas and interpretations about playing his role throughout the book.

Smaug, like the books before, contains fantastic artwork all centered on the dragon who has become iconic in literature and pop culture. He really does need his own book. In the middle of the book is also an outstanding foldout rendering of Smaug and Bilbo inside the treasure hall. It is almost frame-able if not for the fact that it is attached to the book.

I cannot wait for the next in the series and also wonder if the third installment of the Hobbit will also have two more volumes. This book is both enjoyable to anyone who has fallen in love with the movies and Middle-earth in itself and also to anyone who has a deep appreciation and fascination for fantasy art. Smaug Unleashing the Dragon doubles both as a movie memorabilia and a standalone dragon art book.
