The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Chronicles: Art & Design explores and celebrates the creative vision of the second film in Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson's trilogy adaptation of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien.

This lavish volume follows Bilbo, Gandalf and Thorin's Company of Dwarves eastward, through hitherto unseen regions of Middle-earth, on their quest to reclaim the lost realm of Erebor from the Dragon Smaug.

Exploring the design and development of the environments, cultures, creatures and artefacts encountered by the characters, its 224 pages are filled with more than 1,000 stunning images of conceptual art, supplementary photographs and detailed commentary provided by the film's cast and crew.

The Hobbit Chronicles show the incredible attention to detail that goes into everything that is being produced for these films and are a wonderful opportunity to showcase the designs and artistry of so many people within their respective departments.

Richard Taylor - CEO & Co-founder, Weta Workshop

The book showcases art by the film's concept art directors Alan Lee and John Howe, alongside work by other artists from Weta Workshop, Weta Digital, and 3Foot7. In addition to artist quotes, cast members reflect on the work and share insights into their involvement in the design process.

It truly is a unique opportunity to see artwork by a wide range of artists across a multitude of disciplines in the film-making community of Wellington, New Zealand and to hear directly from them about the inspiration behind their work.

The book includes an introduction by The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug's concept art director Alan Lee and a foreword by the film's set decorator Ra Vincent.

As a bonus feature, unique to this book, there is a special fold-out replica of the portrait of the Master of Lake-town, played by Stephen Fry, exactly as it appears in the film.

Compiled by Weta Workshop senior concept designer Daniel Falconer, this is the third book in The Hobbit Chronicles series and it has been created in full collaboration with key members of the production's creative team to ensure the most comprehensive and authentic film companion possible.

As the previous volumes, the book is published as an embossed hardcover edition without dustjacket. All books ship directly from Weta's warehouse in Wellington, New Zealand in a specially commissioned cardboard box sturdy enough to ensure your book will arrive in great condition.

  1. A mighty collection
I own all Hobbit Chronicle book and let me say that if my house ever was to burn down, those books would be one of the first things I\'d try to safe!

  2. My most recent book from Weta, and I am not disappointed! Like with the other Hobbit Trilogy books I own from Weta, they go in-depth into the creation process of each film. This one is a bit different from the other three I own (Cloaks&Daggers, BotFA: Art and Design, and Art of War) as this one has a bit less of artist, actor, and creator input and more large-scale artwork; this is no downside, though, as the art Weta gave full, uninterrupted spreads to totally deserve their spotlight.

  3. Fantastic Third Entry
Yet another masterpiece that continues the excellence of detailing the trails and trials of The Hobbit Trilogy. Covering everything from troubling costume designs to how they created a civilization that lives within the shadow of Smaug, this book is an absolute wonder to read and well worth the price. And to the person that sneaked in the "Root 66" sign, you made my day.

  11. Fantastic!
I been so exited for this book. The cover are just awsome and it feels like Dragon skin, I really, really like all the sketches and pictures, they are just amazing. You can see things you don´t recognize in the movie like all the bottles, tables, chairs e.t.c.
The only thing thats not so good is that its not so much about "Smaug" in the book ¨so now I'll have to wait for new book "Smaug: Unleashing the Dragon"

But this is a FANTASTIC book anyway, thank you very much Weta!

  16. Magnifique
Ce livre est tout aussi magnifique que les précédents. Il les a rejoins dans la bibliothèque, cela en fait une très belle collection, dédicacée en plus. Peu de choses sur Smaug mais, d'après certaines informations, un livre lui sera consacré. J'attends donc.

  20. ANOTHER wonderful book
My ONLY complaint is on the artist signatures, I have no idea which 4 artists signed my book. Going past that complaint, another awesome book for my collection. superb shipping. Crisp pages. I kinda wanted a bit more of Smaug in the book though, but no huge deal on what WAS placed in there. Anxious for the next installment of hobbit books: cloaks and daggers. Keep up the awesome work weta.
