As huge fans of Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal (1982), Wētā Workshop is excited to dive into the world of Thra and create premium collectibles for this iconic film. The Skeksis have remained separated from their other halves, the urRu, for too long; only by repairing the Crystal of Truth can balance be restored to the world of Thra. It falls to the Gelflings Jen and Kira, the last of their kind, to fulfil the ancient prophecy.

In a shrouded valley, lost to time, a Gelfling boy is nurtured and taught by the wise Mystics.

With kindness and patience, the ten gnarled sages share with Jen the shapes and names of the world of Thra. With gentle, protective arms they keep him here, secret and safe from the horrors outside. For beyond the confines of this hidden sanctuary the Three Suns burn above a world out of balance, where Gelfling are no more. The last of his kind, Jen bears the burden of a dark and terrible time before he was born, but while he knows of the cruel Skeksis who murdered his parents from his master’s stories, only as the Great Conjunction approaches does he learn the full truth of the tale and the part he must yet play in its telling.

Change comes, and with the passing of urSu, the Master, Jen must forsake his home, farewelling his surrogate family to venture forth into strange lands. Journeying beyond the walls of the vale he seeks a creature by the name of Aughra, from whom he gains a strange gift: a glittering shard of pure crystal.

Before he can learn what to do with this artifact, crab-like Garthim, soldiers of the Skeksis, attack Aughra’s home, leaving Jen alone in the world that hunts him. Afraid and uneasy as the Three Suns climb toward each other in the sky, Jen is left with more questions, a growing sense of dread, and a purpose yet to be understood or fulfilled.

SPECIAL BASE DESIGN

The three different sized circular bases across our 1:6 scale Dark Crystal range represent the Three Suns in the skies of Thra; the dying sun, rose sun, and great sun. Familiar iconography from the floor of the Crystal Chamber are featured around the outside. Spy the symbols of the urSkeks, which have since been appropriated as signs of discord and Skeksis aggression.

Reflecting on our childhoods, every one of us can pinpoint moments of profound impact that affected the direction our lives would take. Seeing The Dark Crystal back in 1982 at the age of seven was one such pivotal event for me. The world that Jim Henson and his creative collaborators had crafted was so rich and enchanting that I could think about little else afterwards, and that fascination has stayed with me my whole life. It shaped the trajectory of my career. Celebrating the world of Thra and its characters in collectible form now is literally my dream come true.

A NOTE ON OPEN EDITION COLLECTIBLES

Jen the Gelfling is an Open Edition statue, meaning it is not restricted to a specific number of reproductions; however, this does not guarantee Wētā Workshop will continue to produce the statue in the future. We recommend purchasing your Open Edition statue early to avoid disappointment.

OUR DARK CRYSTAL COLLECTIBLES

So rich and visionary was Jim Henson’s 1982 passion project that it inspired dreamers across the creative arts, including a whole generation of film effects artists now working at Weta Workshop. Released at a time when many of our crew were young and beginning to explore their own creative energies, The Dark Crystal was an eye-opener: it was possible to bring imaginary worlds to life, and it could be a career!

Now more than 30 years later we have the great pleasure of breathing life once more into this magical world, celebrating the creativity and passion that inspired so many of us today. We hope you’ll join us in reliving the world of Thra and its inhabitants as we continue to explore Jim Henson’s 1982 The Dark Crystal.

  1. A True Likeness
    Quality
    100%
The likeness of the sculpting is amazing. The detail is incredible, including the slight blue streaks seen in Jen's hair. Any statue depiction of Jen could never be complete without him possessing the shard. It is captured perfectly here.

  2. Bad paint job
    Quality
    40%
This is my second review. The first was never posted. The sculpt is amazing. What fails is the paint job. His face hands and feet are different colors. His hands are slimy with black streaks. As well the base is not the same color as Kira’s So if you put them together they do not match. I waited a year for this. And am dissatisfied and disappointed. Most of my DK figures have broke on their own due to ooor manufacturing. I do not recommend these.

    Kia ora Joe,

I'm incredibly sorry to hear your order hasn't lived up to your expectations! While all of our products are hand painted and can vary on some details, this sounds more concerning from your description. I can't find any record of you contacting our support team about this order so if you can please send 2-3 photos of your Jen the Gelfling we would be more than happy to find a solution for this!

    Thank you,
