An orator of eloquence and standing in the halls of Erebor before the coming of the dragon Smaug, Balin the Dwarf, eldest son of Fundin, was as quick in action as he was in wit.

To match the fiery words he could conjure, Balin the Dwarf wielded in battle a long, flat-bladed mace wrought in a coppery hue that caught the light and shone like a flame in his hands. Though age and long miles might have tempered the keenness of the old warrior's reflexes, both mind and weapon are as sharp as the day the dragon first descended upon the dwarves' mountain home, and Balin the Dwarf will not shy from drawing his star-pointed blade when foes threaten.

Balin's Mace was created for the film by the artists at Weta Workshop. Incredibly tough, yet safer than a sharpened steel blade, it has been finished to a standard that can confidently be displayed in 3D, high resolution, at 48 frames per second in the finished movie.

This prop replica has been created from molds of the original weapon used in the film, using the same high impact urethane material as the props on set and finished using the same techniques and materials.

Although we use steel and aluminium to make a lot of our swords, often we benefit from the casting of these in a high impact urethane, as we are able to capture the complexity of detail we are wishing to cast into some of our weapons. We have therefore chosen to present our collector's edition of Hobbit weapons in the same material used for the making of the film props, to exactly replicate the techniques and artistry used in the films.

Balin's Mace is an Open Edition piece, and comes with a reinforced polystone wall plaque for display, pride of place, on your wall.

Please note: images are of pre-production prototype. Each set is painted by hand and variations will occur.

Weta Workshop’s authentic prop replicas are designed by the very same artists and technicians who work on our movies, using the same techniques and materials. We treat our prop replicas with the same level of care, quality and attention to detail that we bring to our film work.

  1. Impressive item
Even bigger than I expected. Highly detailed. Great prop replica.

  2. Very nice
It looks very nice, but not quite as real as Dwalin\'s axes, I don\'t really know why, maybe it\'s the \"bronze\" color, I don\'t know. Maybe it would look better if it didn\'t hang next to \"real\" axes and swords?
It does look very nice, I\'m just nitpicking. It\'s very good.

  3. Good Prop
I'm not sure why it was declared as an 'Open Edition'. Mine was numbered 671/1000.

The details are amazing. Definitely has some weight in it unlike Kili's, Fili's or Taurel's dagger which feels like cheap plastic. I imagine that weight would be significantly more if it was cast out of metal. The fact that it was not made out of metal helped me to procure the prop to ship to Malaysia.

I was hoping that the grip would be made out of leather, like the real prop would, but it is cast out of urethane.

  4. the Mace
Don't get me wrong I love this piece. The design is amazing but I don't like the feel and the paintjob on this. Its too light and feels like plastic. Paint job could have been done so much better. If only the did it same as mace in the Balin statue. Its Matt finish not glosdy. The glossy colour does not help the plastic feel. Hopefully I will get it fixed :)

  5. Better than expected!
Ever since I heard about these replicas I was a bit skeptical, Weta offered a limited offer So I thought i'd have a punt at one of their items.
I can honestly say I dont know what I was ever concerned about.
The quality is amazing, The Mace feels great and looks stunning! It does its job as a lovely wall mount perfectly!
The Wall mount is stunning quality also!
Worth buying! Will look at buying other weta replicas soon!
My only criticism: The box isn't anything special... its a box! (Not like United Cutlery where the box is something you have to keep!)

  6. Powerful feel.
Okay, so I hope you read the description before this review because I'm not going to repeat anything from there.

This only took a few days to arrive. The packaging meant it got here in perfect condition, and it's worth every penny or cent you spent on it.

The mace itself is a great size. There's an outstanding feel to it and it'll look good on any wall. I can't find any flaws with it. If you're considering buying it, just do it. You'll be very glad you did.
