CREATING THRANDUIL, THE WOODLAND KING

Sculpted by Wētā Workshop artist Steven Saunders and towering at a metre in height – with a width to match – Thranduil, the Woodland King represents the largest 1:6 scale statue Weta Workshop has created.

The statue was brought to life through the combined talents of Wētā Workshop’s technicians, craftspeople, and collectibles development team, who were able to draw on rich reference material: the actual costume from the film; concept art; and photographs from set. “Everything was incredibly well documented,” says collectibles art director Daniel Falconer. To support and enhance the cohesion of the piece, Steven followed the sculpture through each stage of the creative process, from digital modelling, sculpting and model-making, right through to molding, casting, and painting.

The rich detail was achieved through a combination of digital and physical sculpting. Once the form was 3D printed, Steven applied a base layer of clay and worked methodically to capture a range of textures by hand. The resultant statue is one of great contrast; of surfaces rough and matte; smooth and glossy. Flattened staircase slabs and intricate fallen foliage. Above it all, the curling antlers of the Elven throne, half-carved, half-grown, with the King himself sitting in autumnal fabric, majestic.

Images show a pre-production prototype. As each sculpture is hand-painted, variations may occur.

This piece is truly marvellous! It is so grand and the attention to detail is insane. This piece is the jewel of my vast Weta collection and an absloute show stopper centre piece in my house. Worth every dollar.

  2. One hundred years is a mere blink in the life of an elf!
I never thought Gandalf and Frodo on cart would ever get made, let alone this!
The sheer scale of this piece makes it a very commanding presence in an average collection room and a real space eater. However, it\'s sheer size does not deter from the fact that this is a spectacular piece of sculpting and painting.
The throne itself is beautifully done in it\'s depiction of an ancient, fossilized tree root/trunk which has had steps carved out of it to reach the lofty seat area which has been adorned with a set of similarly fossilized Giant Elk antlers to surround the Woodland King. Look closely at the steps and you will see a beautiful vein of amber running through it down to the stone paved and walled base. The base itself has intricate elven scroll work decorating it and laying scattered on the paved area are the fallen leaves of the fading Elven kingdom.
Thranduil sits in all his royal finery and here the artists have really excelled. His layered fine clothing is very detailed and painted to give it a luxurious and real fabric look. The likeness and skin tone of Thranduil is spot on, right down to the lofty arrogance of an ancient ruler who has turned away from the troubles of the outside world.
The exclusive Royal Guard is another well crafted and painted piece that is loaded with fine detailing that just highlights how much thought went into designing these characters right down to things such as belts, footwear and jewelry.
Stunning piece all round but with a 3ft span to navigate with it is not for the space challenged.
Worthy of the Master Collection title.

  5. Breathtaking
This piece is unbelievable. Its presence makes it a center piece on any collection. The amount of detail everywhere from base to the king, the soldier deserves to be mentioned as one of the most detailed pieces I have ever seen. Paint job is perfect. May Weta bring us many Master Collection items at this level of awesomeness.
