FOND MEMORIES FROM DANIEL FALCONER

I first met actor Lawrence Makoare when he stepped out of the shadows to say boo as I was walking through a dark corridor late one night at Weta Workshop. What an introduction to the guy who would play one of the most memorable and terrifying bad guys of the trilogy! It was a case of mistaken identity, Lawrence thinking I was someone else and taking the opportunity to prank his friend, but once I’d recovered my composure we began chatting and quickly became friends.

That same impish sense of humour would serve Lawrence well as he undertook the remarkable and sometimes challenging transformation from kind and hilarious man into a savage fighting Uruk-hai captain! The role required him to be glued into a full facial prosthetic, including heavy wig and a foam cowl that shrouded his entire head and tucked into the leather and fibreglass armour worn by the Uruks. This sat over chainmail and foam arms and legs. The final touches were lynx-eyed contact lenses and sharpened dentures, with the entire transition taking hours to complete, and that was just for starters.

During the days in which Lawrence shot Lurtz’s introductory scenes, when the character would appear in just a loin cloth, the actor had to undergo a much more ambitious make-up application involving being glued almost head to toe into a full body prosthetic. The process took most of the night, and Lawrence sometime dozed in the chair as the prosthetics make-up team, lead by Gino Acevedo, whom Lawrence had mistaken me for in that dark corridor, painstakingly stuck on each element of his man to monster transformation.

The result was worth it, of course, and what stepped out of the trailer in the bright light of day was a somewhat sleep-deprived but undeniably magnificent contrivance of the Wizard Saruman: a fighting Uruk-hai, sword in hand, ready to, ‘Find the Halflings!’

This is a collectible I have always wanted to do! Lurtz is, in fact, my favourite character that we’ve ever created in our career.

Richard Taylor - CEO & Co-founder, Weta Workshop

At Amon Hen the Uruks fall upon the Fellowship, finding them scattered amid the ruins and woods. Lurtz spies Merry and Pippin and sends his warriors after them, but meets unexpected resistance when Boromir, warrior of Gondor, comes running to the hobbits’ aid. Resolute before overwhelming odds, Boromir slays many Uruk-hai, but wily Lurtz knows better than to come within range of the swordsman’s blade, preferring instead to stand off and skewer him with thick-hafted arrows.

Weta Workshop is proud to welcome Lurtz at Amon Hen to its high-quality 1:6 scale Middle-earth line; a line that has been designed by the very same artists and technicians who work on our movies.

It takes 400-500 hours to design, sculpt, model make, mold, and paint the prototype for each new piece. Whether it be a prop replica, beautiful environment or iconic character, we treat our collectibles with the same level of care and attention to detail that we bring to our film work.

Please note: images are of a pre-production prototype. Each statue is painted by hand and slight variations will occur.

  1. All of Weta\'s statues are amazing, but this one is a class of it\'s own. It is so realistic, you expect him to fire his arrow any second and run off to \"find the halflings!!\". Down to the smallest detail like rivets holding his greaves in place it is perfect. I too had a little trouble with the arrow, but with some patience it works.

  2. One of Weta\'s best releases to date (in my opinion). A stunningly realistic figure that manages to capture the evil menace of Lurtz\'s nature to perfection. The pose is totally natural and very realistic unlike a few other figurines whose stances are unfortunately way overcooked. The only minor gripe I have is that the arrow really should have had a hole or groove to secure it properly, otherwise well done Weta, it\'s an absolute work of art!

  3. MY JAW DROPPED
This is my first Weta statue and when i unpacked this bad boy, my jaw literally dropped. When my fiance and her sister saw this, they were quite spooked because it looked like it came right out of the film. I\'ve had this statue for over a year now and i enjoy it every single day. It\'s an ICONIC piece of the LOTR world when Bor dies....

    GREAT JOB ON THIS WETA!

  4. All Great - Two notes for improvement
Arrived today, assembling caused no problems at all, even the bow string attached from first attempt, the bow is flexible :) details amazing, pose - fantastic. For improvement : The arrow falls down easily because attachment is weak. Left foot is not repeating the surface and fingers are a little up the surface. But this is minor when you have the Lurtz in front of you. Amazing piece of art. No worries folks. Accidentaly smashed the statue with elbow, bow hand and arrow dissasembled falled down, but no crashes on any part! I am writing this to ensure you that crash test the statue passed succesfully too :)

  5. Poor QC - Fiddly and Weak Bow
Great overall Statue, the details is immense... however I have a similar issue same as other collector. The Base is uneven, The bow is a nightmare to attach and comes away at the end near the pin which make it hard to stay put and the put is cupped and scratches in places. Not what you would expect from Statue at this price point!

  6. Oh my what a work of art this piece is. It LOOKS! just like him. Ok peeps, do not hesitate to get this brilliant piece. You will absolutely fall in love with this work of art!! I\'m not sure how I would describe him. Its an actual Mini Lurtz!!! This one really was knocked out of the ball park. Everything about this piece screams exact replica of him. The only thing I\'m having an issue with is the bow. How does one place it, so it stays put?

  7. Great Statue but the deffects make it a mediocre one
The Statue was great, great paint job and great modelling, but it lacks of a good Quality Control (scratches, chips and uneven base) and a reliable customer service (no total refund accepted for this kind of issues). This statue left me a bad taste just because of what surrounds it.

  8. Love It!
This statue is awesome! Great pose, beautiful paint job and awesome detail. The bow string may seem too short at first, however, if you slowly and carefully bend the bow itself you can get the string around the two middle fingers. That\'s what worked for me. You just have to be very careful with it! That being said, you will not be disappointed with this piece from Weta!

  9. Very detailed piece, but Tricky to Assemble...
What a great paintjob and a dynamic pose! Very happy with this new piece in my collection. Only to bad Weta didnt put any assembling instructions with it. Almost had a heart attack while pulling the string of the bow and it took me 45 minutes to attach the arrow to the hand. I am happy its still whole though, i allso have Azog from the hobbit but the chain there broke because i didnt knew which piece needed to be put in place first.

  10. Lurtz fantastic ! but make something with short bow string
I just have it. Its just wow, I think face is cool and eyes are awesome. Detail and quality is really cool and textures. But that bow string is just not right. Its to short. Ther is no posibility to put it in the other hand. In bowman figure this string is great becouse it just fit and look naturaL. But in Lurtz string is taut instead of loose and it looks diferent than this on sales page.

  11. Great addition
I just received Lurtz and he is stunning, the detail is brilliant. I have a collection of the Orcs and Uruk and he is the most dynamic so far he will be taking pride of place. Another great job Weta.

  12. Wonderfull Evil
I`ve got my pre ordered Lurtz today and everything is just wow. I`m just a bit afraid of the bowstring. I`m afraid of breaking the bow, when I try to fix the string on the other hand.

  15. Good but not movielike
The Face Painting is not correct.
The white lines under the eyes should be near the nose.

  16. Does not look like Lurtz
I love the subject matter, but the face on this statue does not look like Lurtz from the film, which is a shame. I think it looks more like Oprah on a bad day.
