In the cavernous gloom beneath the lonely Mountain, all is quiet. A hot stillness lies upon the vast desert of gold and treasure that carpets the ancient Dwarf city's once teeming halls; a treasure unrivalled in all Middle-earth, but which glitters unlooked upon by mortal eyes.

For the wealth of Erebor is not unguarded.

Many decades have passed since the Dragon Smaug's appetite and lust for gold led him south from the Withered Heath to assail the kingdom of the Dwarves. Swift and terrible was his coming, in which untold multitudes of men and Dwarves died in fire and ruin. For now, all is peaceful in the halls of the sleeping Dragon, coiled serpent-like in his hoard.

Yet this stillness is an illusion, for the jealous mind of a Dragon is never restful. Fevered dreams of thieves and usurpers make his slumber an angry one, eyes snapping open to dart back and forth, long snake-neck rising suddenly to swing about, counting the coins and cups, platters and gem-studded jewellery, his senses keenly tuned to the barest hint of scent or soft step that might herald the intrusion of some greedy, reckless fool. Smaug will share no trinket of his hoard, and as immeasurably vast and powerful as he is, doubt gnaws the corners of his confidence, fraying his wits and dooming him to a restless, broken, red-hot sleep.

Into this simmering pit of suspicion and rage stumbles a simple hobbit with no thought of treasure. Propelled by his obligation to honour a naive promise to a friend and prove himself worthy of a Wizard's faith, Bilbo Baggins treads nervously upon the hallowed gold. It is a simple act of astounding bravery that impels each nervous step, spilling trickles of coins that become a cascade, a landslide of gold that will in turn unleash upon the world a monstrous wrath, change the course of history and precipitate a brief and bloody siege: for Bilbo has awoken the Dragon.

Our authentic prop replicas and collectibles are designed by the very same artists who have worked on the three films, so effectively they come straight from Middle-earth.

Richard Taylor - CEO & Co-founder, Weta Workshop

Smaug the Terrible is recreated in 1:72 scale jealously guarding his hoarded gold.

Please note: Smaug the Terrible is supposed to have a horn on either side of his head missing from a battle long ago. Being a dragon is hard work.

Product images are of a pre-production prototype. Each statue is painted by hand and variations will occur.

Weta Workshop’s high-quality Middle-earth collectibles are designed by the very same artists and technicians who work on our movies. It takes hundreds of hours to design, sculpt, model make, mold, and paint the prototype for each new piece. Whether it be a prop replica, beautiful environment or iconic character, we treat our collectibles with the same level of care and attention to detail that we bring to our film work.

  1. My preciousss!!!
Got this piece last christmas and all I can say how amazing this piece is!
My favorite Middle Earth collectable to date!
I myself am a reptile keeper and have a great love for paleontology so it\'s safe to say that dragons are one of my favorite fantasy creatures out there!
And well Smaug, Smaug is my favorite cinematic dragon, so I just needed this piece and gosh was I left in awe when I recieved it!
The details and the size of it are just wow, a centerpiece to every collection!
Although I must agree with some people commenting on the paint job, for this price it could have been done better!
But still 5 stars for me and worth every penny!

  2. Happy Customer
I received my Smaug statue and I have a few mixed feelings. Overall the statue is fantastic, the pose and detail in the sculpt are incredible. The only things that detracts is the paint job. The paint is still very good, better than most figures you can buy elsewhere, however I personally feel it is not up to Wetas usual high standard.
Still no regrets in purchasing this statue, he is magnificent on the shelf!

Je suis très déçu, je voulais acheter la statue de Smaug le terrible mais je ne le ferais pas car j\'ai appris que ces \"œuvres\" sont faites en Chine et non par Weta compagnie !!!

  4. A Smaug for the ages!
For me *pricey* - but, as all collectibles go, and their prices climb, this is one I\'d never regret. A remarkable \"alive-looking\" sculpt that you can actually display re the size - but he\'s a big boy LOL! I\'ve got no complaints at all about the paint - he\'s vibrant and fire-red orange and there is a point of interest wherever I look. I cherish this guy - doubt if anything like this will be ever be made again, so I\'d definitely grab him if you can. A winner in every way - looks like he is going to start moving!

  7. King under the mountain
Breathtaking sculpt. Hard to believe this is made by human hands. Every. Single. Scale. on his body is visible. The personality, character and pose is spot on, this is not just a collectible, it is a real piece of art. Obvious amounts of skill and craftsmanship involved in all steps of the production. Only thing preventing full marks is a paintjob not quite on part with the rest of the product. Two thumbs up!

  9. Far from "Terrible."
This wonderful work of art is nothing short of magnificent. Its beautifully crafted design and the precise levels of detail, from tiny scales to battle scared horns, really display a true level of love and devotion that lives up to Weta's reputation.

Smaug was always my favorite childhood character. Thank you, Weta Workshop, for bringing him to life!

  11. First Impression Was Great But....
As I cannot edit my original review I am submitting a new one, so sorry for it appearing double, but there are a few things I would like to add and point out.
I recently received my Smaug The Terrible model and was pretty impressed with its size. Shame the box had been tampered with (I'm presuming when going through customs) and the side of the box ripped and dented where the inner packaging had been shoved back into the box. The head was not as detailed painted as the rest of the model but overall I am very impressed with this piece.
Having said that, upon owning this model for a few weeks I have to say that my first impressions are not how I now feel about the piece. Gold paint is found of Smaug's tail (and not on any odd coins like on his hands, it's just poorly painted), there is no under-wing detail to like that in the movie, and just the whole dark brownish armor running down his back is very untidy airbrushing.
As for the base I feel that it could have been designed a little better and have the gold sat atop a cut-through of the Lonely Mountain floor instead of upon a wooden base which does take a lot away from the whole model.
I would also just like to point out that being a Weta piece it is a shame to see that it was made in China and not in the actual Weta Workshop in NZ.

  12. Magnificent
The sheer amount of work alone justifies it's price. The level of detail in the treasure is phenomenal. It really is a work of art. Even the areas that you wouldn't normally see, like the hind feet, are painted with skill and care. The paint colours expertly chosen. Metallic blue scales?, beautiful. Another Weta Triumph.

  14. Phantastic
We gpt our Smaug today! I must say: I was astonished!! Smaug is absolutely georgious. I have to say that the money was well spent. I even found the small scar on his breast from his injury. Now he got's a special place in our living room so we can always look at him. But...one thing disturbs me a little bit: I thought Smaug was made from the artists at Weta, but when I looked at the parcel it said: Made in CHINA! How can that be. Anyway he is marvelous and incredible.

  15. Absolutely Wonderful
This item is absolutely outstanding. It is much bigger than I expected. It barely fits in the spot that I had planned for it. The detail of the dragon is incredible. I do wish that weta would have spent a little more time detailing the treasure that Smaug is standing on rather than just making everything gold. Other than that I have no complaints. He looks amazing and I will treasure this item for years to come. Thank you weta for your amazing work and I can't wait to get more items in the future.

  18. Out of this world
Smaug is just incredible. At the 1:72 scale, every single scale on his body is visible on the statue. You have to see it by yourself to appreciate it, at this level of craftsmanship a collectible surpasses being just that and transcends into art, even if it is a mass produced piece and not hand chiseled from a single piece of stone by a master. It certainly looks the part.

Since Weta also made the 3D model for the movie they were able to use this for making the collectible, the amount of detail would not be possible if done by human sculptor hands alone save said sculptor needing a straight jacket when done. Slightly sloppy paint job, but the rest of the product is stellar. Outstanding product overall.

  19. Amazing Smaug
This is really an astounding piece, beautiful and amazing in every sense of the word. And huge. It was definitely worth the wait.

    Review by

  20. Massive
Unlike King Under the Mountain, this is an impressive piece based on size and model difficulty alone; however suffers from the same underwhelming paint job. His pile of gold looks like matte gold spray paint, You want to call it beautifully detailed try looking up Glimmerscale from Enchantica. I own them both and that is a pile of gold. Also Smaug suffers from same matte red finish, not what I was expecting at all, but he will join our collection. Based on pics, I thought he would break into the top 3 of favorite dragons, but sadly maybe top 15.

  25. Awesome and HEFTY!
I received my Smaug yesterday and opened up the box tonight; this thing is massive and weighs a LOT! First time I've ever had a figurine come with it's own wrench to remove it from the packaging. I'd suggest laying it on it's side when you take it out of the box so you can remove the nuts and bolts on the bottom before removing the rest of the packaging. There's also a lot of various sizes and shapes of foam blocks to remove (mainly from beneath the wings.) Impressive packaging to insure he arrives intact; nice job Weta! Just a tip when trying to remove the plastic wrap from the figure - place you hand under Smaug's belly to lift him up and you won't have a problem, as the plastic is wrapped around him and the base as well.

As to the figure itself - it is an impressive sculpt and paint job. The detail is incredible! I think my only nit-pick would be the fact that at some points where Smaug contacts the gold mound (for instance the front of the left wing) it doesn't look as though his 'anatomy' is above or below the gold, but rather molded 'into' it. I'm sure this is just a limitation of the painting process and the difficultly of obtaining subtle shading in a 'mass produced' product more than anything else. Yes, I know this is limited to only 2000 copies but there's only so much time that any painter/artist can spend on any particular figure.

Other than that minor quibble this an IMPRESSIVE piece, and since I own the original Balrog, the new one (Demon of Shadow and Flame), Barad-dur and Orthanc, I hope that conveys my sense of appreciation for the work that the artists at Weta have done on this piece.

    Kudos!

  26. Really amazing
    Hello,

I just received my statue here in France.
The statue arrived intact which gives evidence that the packaging in efficient.

The statue itself is absolutely beautiful.
I'm a model-maker usually used to dislike these kind of miniatures that I don't build and paint myself, but this one drove me crazy when I saw pictures and I understood why when getting it out of its box.

Really congratulations to you Weta guys.

  29. I Am Fire. I Am Death!
Smaug the chiefest and greatest of calamities is now gracing my kitchen. I've seen a few videos from conventions on Youtube where this piece was featured, but the videos don't really do the statue justice. It is very detailed (including the missing patch of scales) and there was a lot of care with the painting.

I wish the package had come with removal instructions like another person posted, but I still managed. The box suffered a bit in transport, but thankfully the statue was unharmed.

    Great job WETA!

  36. awesome piece even the packaging bites
This review is just to let people know that the piece is awesome. Sculpt, colour, size this thing draws attention no mater where in a room you stand - however BEWARE the packaging, Normally the statue lifts straight out from its polystyrene packaging, Not Smaug, he is so big and powerful that he has to be bolted to the base with 5 or six, six inch bolts. I lifted the polystyrene packaging out of the box and placed it onto my table, whereupon the 3 inches of protruding metal screw scratched the crap out of my table. They include a small spanner to remove the bolts but just be aware that they are there. May have been worth Weta just popping a little advisory note in there to warn people. So people , you have been warned. Piece is awesome though.

I was front stage center on 11/11 at 11 pacific. I can't wait til this one of a kind piece hits my front door.
