5 Nov 07 Weta Designer Christian Pearce reveals how this awesome illustration came about for Peter Jackson's King Kong...
"Look at those giant hands and rippling abs! That weird creature sure knows how to pick a succulent meal. This guy was another step towards what became the Scorpiopede, that heroic creature you don't remember from the movie. Unless you own the extended version.
"The drawing and sculpting part is really it's own reward, and the fact that he never made it to the theater doesn't bother me too much. The poor guys who had to model, texture, animate, light and composite him probably feel a little differently. They were really doing some long days towards the end of this film's production.
"That little line drawing in the corner proves how scientifically I was approaching the design. It says "figure 1a" for cripes sake! You can't get much more scientific than that! It's always a bummer when something you put a lot of thought and time into gets cut from a film, but at least I go to do all the fun stuff."
