11 Apr 07 Designer Greg Broadmore chats about his ''Chimpobat' creation for King Kong - before any brief was given and artistic interpretations went wild...
"This was an early design for the Flying creatures, or Terapus Mordax. It was well before we had a clear brief. We knew there would be a scene of Jack and Anne's escape from Kong's Lair, comparable to the original film, but that there would be no Pterosaurs on the island. So we mainly designed Mammalian flying creatures. Bats, rodents, primates etc...
"Also we knew that the scene would have many flying creatures and not just one. We thought that it would be cool if each creature on it's own was perhaps just a little to small to carry a human, and that a group of them would squabble over them as prey, maybe several grabbing at each person.
"This design was pretty 'monstery' (yes, it's a word!) but was intended to be a primate, adapted for gliding flight. It kinda reminds me of the flying monkeys from 'The Wizard of Oz'. The final creature, designed many months later after a more defined brief was inspired by hairless Sphinx cats and Mole rats."
